Synopsis

Ángela Vidal, the young television reporter who entered the building with the firemen, manages to make it out alive. But what the soldiers don't know is that she carries the seed of the strange infection. She is to be taken to a provisional quarantine facility, a high-security installation where she will have to stay in isolation for several days. An old oil tanker, miles off shore and surrounded by water on all sides, has been especially equipped for the quarantine.

BA_Harrison REC 4 opens as army doctor Guzmán (Paco Manzanedo) and soldier Lucas (Críspulo Cabezas) rescue TV reporter Ángela Vidal (Manuela Velasco) from the apartment block where the original movie took place. The trio are put on a quarantine ship where scientists conduct experiments into creating an antivirus. However, the true nature of the infection means that it isn't long before the survivors are running for their lives from drooling, crazed, flesh-hungry 'zombies'.Part 3 of the REC series had quite a lot of detractors, but I enjoyed it for its refreshing change in approach, which saw the introduction of a touch of humour and a lot more splatter. REC 4: Apocalypse is a return to the dark, claustrophobic atmosphere of the first two films (but thankfully, with minimal found footage style camera-work); as such, it will be seen as a welcome case of 'back to basics' by many, but to me it felt very predictable, and, as a result, less satisfying. I also found the gore lacking and was surprised by how few scares there were.Oh well, at least director Jaume Balagueró had his heroine strip to a tight white vest and got her good and sweaty for the finalé (sometimes, it's the simple things in life).5.5 out of 10, generously rounded up to 6 for IMDb.
haunt_freak I am a huge fan of the first two "REC" films. The setting of "REC" and "REC 2" presents a claustrophobic setting where they literally had no escape. "REC 4: Apocalypse" takes place on a ship with a crew that has rescued news anchor Angela Vidal (the survivor from the first two films who may or may not be possessed by a Satanic parasite) as well as another survivor from that horrid third installment (ignore that one, it's awful). While this one abandons the "found-footage" style, it still manages to deliver tension and terror. Angela (Manuela Velasco) is a likable protagonist (or is she the antagonist...? Hmmmm...) who kicks some infected butt.I can understand why people didn't care for this one. It kind of puts the whole "possession" aspect to the side that "REC 2" masterfully set up in favor of being another infected zombie flick, but that didn't bother me all that much. I was just excited to see Angela back in action! I say give it a watch. It certainly isn't the best in the series, but it's definitely not the worst (I'm looking at you, "REC 3: Genesis").
westsideschl Unimaginative - just borrowed (stole?) the same old formula of scientists trying to isolate virus (or other nasty) that infects people turning them into zombies. The true zombies are the ones hooked on this time-worn, now thread bare, setup. Virus turns out to be a surprisingly very accurate rendition of a common worm only bigger and of course is disgustingly swallowed by the host. Of course you've got everyone isolated (only this time it's a ship) and there's a few military types to supply action and weapons. What good is a zombie without lots of firepower to showcase red dyed corn syrup. Really cheaply made; really poor acting; unbelievable storyline. The best part of the movie, and it's always true with cheap productions, is the DVD cover which almost always will give a false, but sellable, impression. The unimaginative one or two survive as well as, left in doubt (albeit small doubt), the worm. By the way didn't the writers ever finish middle school and learn that worms die in water (more so in salt water) which is why you see them escaping during rains. Thank the gods for Redbox - I'm only out a couple of dollars.
billcr12 The first Rec movie was a pretty good idea with hand held cameras used throughout. A reporter from a tabloid TV show in Spain ventures into a building and finds a very bad virus which turning the tenants into flesh eating zombies. Somehow, it worked for me. Number four takes place on a ship on the ocean for no apparent reason at all. There is a high tech within the ship and Angela, the original reporter, is a passenger, along with numerous army men and scientists seeking a cure for the original virus. A terrible script, along with bad acting, combine to make this a painful ninety five minute experience. Avoid this like the plague.
